Friday Night Lights (2×02) - “Bad Ideas”

Posted on June 23rd, 2008 | by admin |

• Another fantastic episode of Friday Night Lights, which probably just goes without saying by now.

• As usual, everything with Coach and Mrs. Coach was awesome. Connie Britton (Tami) was incredible in this episode, and how could your heart not break for her and also fall in tv love with her after this ep? The separation of the Taylors is really starting to take a toll. Eric needs to get back to Dillon asap!

• The fill-in guidance counselor, Glen, was a fun addition to the show; and I loved his line at the end of the episode when he asked Tami why she and her husband were living apart. What may have seemed like a good idea at the time now seems ridiculous. I loved Tami last season for wanting to stay in Dillon (and thereby keeping Matt and Julie together), but I think I agree with Tami’s revised opinion now: in retrospect, it was a stupid idea. Especially considering that the whole situation backfired and drove Julie to pull away from Matt.

• Julie officially broke up with Matt in this ep, and I’m not sure who is more devastated by this: Matt or me. Seriously, after falling in tv love with them last season and rooting them on as one of last year’s best tv couples, it’s hard to watch their relationship come to an end (even if it’s just temporary).

• I want to be mad at Julie for dumping Matt, but I’m not. She’s young and she’s scared to death that she and Matt will turn into her parents (which she does not see as a good thing), so she put the brakes on. I can, however, be mad at her for kissing the Swede while poor Matt sat at the football party waiting for her. What the heck does she see in that guy?

• I would be more depressed at the break-up of Matt/Julie if it wasn’t for the emergence of new super-tv couple Landry & Tyra. Even with the murder plotline (which I know many people don’t like), these two are pure gold together; and I loved every minute of their time onscreen in this episode. Jesse Plemmons and Adrianne Palicki are both fantastic, even with a plot that is polarizing fans.

• Personally, I was hesitant — but not worried — about the murder storyline at first, but this episode reassured me that the show is going to handle it in a very realistic and authentic way (like everything else on the show), so I’m still not worried about it at all. I’m now really looking forward to what happens next and to see how long Landry and Tyra can keep holding it all together.

• Some of my other favorite moments of this ep include:
– The nurse finding Matt’s porn (good to know that Matt is still human after all);
– Jason’s thank you conversation to Tami;
– Riggins helping Lyla with her drunk father (it’s nice to see these two connecting again);
– Glen Morshower (24) joining the cast as Landry’s dad (perfect casting, if you ask me!);
– The hotshot college player chiding Eric for not being with his wife and newborn daughter;
– Eric’s speech at the hearing;
– Landry, Matt and Grandma Saracen when the tiara arrived; and
Everything with Landry and Tyra.
